The new Advanced Film Certification from the Center for Advanced Film Manufacturing is your direct pipeline into a well-established field with robust growth opportunities. 30% of the world’s coated and dyed film is produced in Martinsville-Henry County and this newly created program will provide you with the skills you need to join this high tech, world leading industry.

The Program

The Advanced Film Certification Program is a 28-credit program offered through Patrick Henry Community College and the New College Institute. Classes are taught at PHCC and NCI and provide access to equipment located at Eastman and Commonwealth Laminating & Coating. As part of the student curriculum, you will be offered either a hands-on or paid internship at either Eastman or Commonwealth Laminating & Coating. At the end of the program, you will be certified in a field that includes solar control films, photovoltaic frontsheets and backsheets, precision coating, laminating and industrial dyeing.

The Center

The Center for Advanced Film Manufacturing will prepare future employees for a career in advanced film manufacturing and related industries. Manufacturers get a highly trained workforce and you get a career to be proud of in a community you already call home.

The courses themselves will be taught at Patrick Henry Community College, New College Institute, and on location at Eastman and Commonwealth Laminating & Coating in Martinsville-Henry County.

Industry:

Eastman Chemical is the leading global manufacturer of performance films – applied to everything from skyscrapers, homes, cars, to mobile home and tablets. The corporation’s third largest facility is located in Fieldale, Virginia – in Henry County. Built in 1956, Eastman purchased the facility and business from Solutia Performance Films in 2012. The following year, Eastman announced a $40 million expansion to be carried out over the next three years. This facility is now one of the largest and most integrated window and performance-coated film manufacturing sites in the world.

Eastman also operates film manufacturing and distribution facilities at the Patriot Centre Industrial Park. The company acquired the former Commonwealth Laminating & Coating in 2014 adding an experienced workforce and Commonwealth’s expertise, paint protection technology, brand and channels to its portfolio.

In 2016, Eastman was named a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award winner as one of the 50 Best Places to Work and recipient of a 2017 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award.

Education:

Patrick Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. It offers 15 associate degree programs with an additional 16 specializations available within those degree options; 12 certificate programs and 40 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

New College Institute is a state-funded educational entity that provides access to bachelor’s degree completion programs, master’s degrees, teacher endorsement programs, teacher recertification courses, and more through partnerships with colleges and universities. NCI strives to be accessible and convenient for students of all ages. Our staff, faculty, and board members are all committed to making NCI a premier educational facility and experience for students and the community.

Economic Development:

The Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation is a nonprofit, public/private economic development organization committed to create new job opportunities and expand the tax base for the area; support and develop local industry; and market Martinsville-Henry County globally as an exceptional place to live, work and play. As of 2014, the MHC region produces over 30% of the world’s coated and dyed film.
